The reason I became interested in this topic is due to my personal experience. Growing up, and until a few years ago, I noticed I had the urge to thank someone or praise them. I would want to accept their praise towards me but would stop myself. And I asked myself, why? I felt shy and embarrassed. It led me to wonder, am I the only one doing this? Hence, I decided to investigate.

I work in a rehabilitation facility alongside my friends. Here, I witness people as they grapple with life and death due to addiction. Sometimes, their primary injury is as simple as their father passing away without ever having expressed his pride in them. They then learn from family and friends that their father had, in fact, expressed his pride in them to everyone else but had never directly told his son. That's because he didn't realize his son needed to hear it.
